or cracks. Replace the clutch housing if nec
-
essary.
d. If the primary driven gear is worn or dam
-
aged, also inspect the primary drive gear as
described in this chapter.
e. Check the damper springs (B, Figure 23)in
the clutch housing. Replace the housing if any
spring is damaged.
6. Inspect the clutch boss for the following:
a. Check the grooves for cracks, nicks or galling
(A, Figure 32) where they come in contact
with the clutch plate tabs. They must be
smooth for chatter-free operation. If there is
any excessive damage, replace the compo
-
nents.
b. Inspect the posts (B, Figure 32) for wear or
galling. If there is any excessive damage, re
-
place the clutch boss.
c. Inspect the inner splines (C, Figure 32) in the
hub for damage. Remove any small nicks
with an oilstone. If damage is excessive, the
clutch boss must be replaced.
8. Check the pressure plate (Figure 33) for cracks,
wear or galling. Inspect the splines (Figure 34)on
the inside face of the pressure plate for roughness or
excessive wear. Replace the pressure plate as neces-
sary.
9. Visually inspect the clutch spring (A, Figure 35)
and spring seat (B) for cracks, wear and other signs
of fatigue.
10. Measure the free height of the clutch spring
with a vernier caliper (Figure 36). Replace the
spring if its height is less than the service limit.
11. Inspect the ends of pushrods No. 1 and No. 2.
Replace either pushrod as necessary.
12. Use a feeler gauge and surface plate to measure
the warp of pushrod No. 2. Replace the pushrod if
warp exceeds the service limit.
13. Inspect the clutch nut for wear or damage.
Maybe sure the threads are in good condition. Re
-
place the nut as necessary.
