MonitorType and screen modes
Monito3
ype
is a computer variable that controls which screen modes (described in the
RISC OS 3 User and Applications Guide) your computer can display.
The following monitor types are defined:
*Modes 33-36 are not designed to be used on TVs, so do not adjust your set (as they
say!).
Note: For screen modes 0-15 on MonitorType 3, 4 and 5 the aspect ratio is
approximately 4:2 (these are known as letterbox modes).
Changing the MonitorType
Normally, you don't have to worry about this, as it is set automatically when you
connect a monitor and switch on the computer (the default Auto setting). Sometimes,
however, you need to be able to change this variable, to make use of all the screen
modes available to your monitor.
For instance, the way some cables are wired may make the computer think that a
Multiscan monitor is a VGA monitor, so unless you change the MonitorType, screen
mode 24 (amongst others) won't be available.
For example, to change the MonitorType variable to 1 without using !Configure,
proceed as follows:
1. Switch off the computer.
2. Switch on the computer, holding down key I on the numeric keypad until the self-test
has completed and the desktop appears.
For more information on this and other ways of setting the MonitorType, see the
chapter entitled
Colours and screen modes
in the RISC OS 3 User and Applications
Guide.
