manufacturer.Harnessesmayconsistofasinglepiece,ormaybedivided
intomultiplesegmentsjoinedbybulkheadconnectors.
9.2VEHICLEINTERFACEMODULE(VIM)
TheVIMcontainsrelaysandfusesnecessarytointerfacethetransmission
controlswiththevehiclewiringsystem.WhenorderingtheVIM,specify12or
24voltstoproperlymatchthevehicleelectricalsystem.
Insomecases,theOEMorbodybuildermaychoosenottousetheAllison
VIM.Inthesecases,theOEMmustspecifyandinstallcomponentswhich
provideaproperinterfacebetweenvehiclewiringandthetransmission
controlsystem.
9.3RETARDERCONTROLS
Inordertomeettheneedsofoperatorsinawidevarietyofapplications,
vocations,andvehiclecongurations,severalretarderapplysystemsare
offeredfortransmissionmodelsintheAllisonTransmission3000and4000
Series.
Certaintypesofapplysystemsmaynotberecommendedforspecic
vocations.Forexample,factorssuchasretarderperformancethatmaynotbe
appropriatefortheclassorvehicletypeordifcultyininstallation.However,
therearetypicallytwoormoreapplytypesavailableformostvehicles.
Inadditiontothestandardanalogcontrolsapproach,thepossibleintegration
oftheretarderwithnumerousothervehiclesystemsthroughacommonSAE
J1939-basedvehiclecontrollercreatesadditionaldesignexibilitywhen
determiningmethodsofpotentialoperatorcontrolofthetransmissionretarder.
TheTransmissionControlModule(TCM)mustbecalibratedtotheproper
methodtoensuredesiredretarderoperation.Operatorcontrolsoftheretarder
canbeaccomplishedbyeitherofthefollowingmethods:
•BothAnalogandJ1939.InputisbasedonaRetarderEnableswitch
foractivation,plusoneormoreAllisonRetarderModulationRequest
(RMR)componentstoselectthedesiredlevelofretardation.Inaddition,
retardationisrequestedorlimitedbasedonmessagesfromanSAE
J1939-basedvehiclecontroller.
•J1939Only.Retardationisrequestedorlimitedbasedonmessages
fromanSAEJ1939-basedvehiclecontroller.
Theanalogcomponentsthatcanbeusedwiththe3000and4000Series
retarderareavailablefromAllisonTransmission.Thesecomponentsprovide
