isimportantthatyoureachtheselectedlowerrangebeforeattemptingto
accelerate.Thisavoidsanunexpecteddownshiftduringacceleration.
3.9ROCKINGOUT
WARNING:Tohelpavoidinjuryorpropertydamagecausedby
suddenmovementofthevehicle,donotmakeshiftsfromN(Neutral)
toD(Drive)orR(Reverse)whentheengineisabovelowidlerpm.
Thevehiclemaylurchforwardorrearwardandthetransmissioncan
bedamaged.AvoidthisconditionbymakingshiftsfromN(Neutral)
toaforwardrangeorR(Reverse)onlywhenthethrottleisclosed
andtheservicebrakesareapplied.
CAUTION:DONOTmakeN(Neutral)toD(Drive)ordirectionalshift
changeswhentheengineisabovelowidlerpm.Also,ifthewheels
arestuckandnotturning,donotapplyfullpowerformorethan10
secondsineitherD(Drive)orR(Reverse).Fullpowerformorethan
10secondsundertheseconditionscancausethetransmissionto
overheat.Ifthetransmissionoverheats,shifttoN(Neutral)and
operatetheengineat1200–1500rpmuntilitcools(2–3minutes).
Ifthevehicleisstuckindeepsand,snow,ormud,itmaybepossibletorock
itoutusingthefollowingprocedure:
1.ShifttoD(Drive)andapplyasteady,lightthrottle(neverfullthrottle).
2.Whenthevehiclehasrockedforwardasfarasitwillgo,applyand
holdthevehicleservicebrakes.
3.Whenenginehasreturnedtoidle,selectR(Reverse).
4.Releasethevehicleservicebrakesandapplyasteady,lightthrottle
(neverfullthrottle)allowingthevehicletorockinR(Reverse)asfar
asitwillgo.
5.Applyandholdthevehicleservicebrakesandallowtheengineto
returntoidle.
ThisproceduremayberepeatedinD(Drive)andR(Reverse)ifeach
directionalshiftcontinuestomovethevehicleagreaterdistance.
