5.8PERIODICFLUIDLEVELCHECKS
Eventhoughtransmissionuidisnotconsumedduringtransmissionoperation
asengineoilmightbe,periodicuidlevelchecksshouldbemadepriorto
placingthevehicleinserviceorjustafterreturningfromservice.Periodicuid
levelcheckshelppreventmechanicalfailureofavehicleortransmission
component.Periodicchecksalsohelptodetectuidleaks,coolerfailure
(contaminatingthetransmissionuid),uidoverll,uidunderllorthewrong
kindofuidusedthelasttimethetransmissionwasserviced.
Checkthetransmissionuidlevelbyoneofthefollowingmethods:
•Dipstick
•UsingAllison5thGenerationor6thGenerationshiftselectorto
electronicallychecktheOilLevelSensor(OLS)locatedinthe
transmissioncontrolvalvemodule

NOTE:OLSisnotavailableinthe3700SPorthe4700/4800
transmissionequippedwiththeretarderoption.
ThedipstickismarkedwithtemperaturebandsforaCOLDandHOTuid
levelcheck.TheuidcheckmarkedCOLDisdesignedtoallowtheuidlevel
tobecheckedfrom16°C(61°F)to60°C(140°F).
NOTE:Onlyusethischecktoconrmadequateuidvolumefora
coldstart-upandnottosetuidlevelsforcontinuedoperation.
TheOLSisdesignedtoautomaticallycompensateforuidtemperature
uctuations(thermalexpansion)withinitsoperatingbandparametersfor
