Certificates
Certificatesareusedtoauthenticatedevicesonanetwork.Thedevicesupportstwotypesof
certificates:
•Client/servercertificates
Aclient/servercertificatevalidatesthedevice’sidentity,andcanbeself-signedorissued
byaCertificateAuthority(CA).Aself-signedcertificateofferslimitedprotectionandcanbe
usedbeforeaCA-issuedcertificatehasbeenobtained.
•CAcertificates
YoucanuseaCAcertificatetoauthenticateapeercertificate,forexampletovalidatethe
identityofanauthenticationserverwhenthedeviceconnectstoanetworkprotectedbyIEEE
802.1X.Thedevicehasseveralpre-installedCAcertificates.
Theseformatsaresupported:
•Certificateformats:.PEM,.CER,and.PFX
•Privatekeyformats:PKCS#1andPKCS#12

IEEE802.1x
IEEE802.1xisanIEEEstandardforport-basednetworkadmissioncontrolprovidingsecure
authenticationofwiredandwirelessnetworkdevices.IEEE802.1xisbasedonEAP(Extensible
AuthenticationProtocol).
ToaccessanetworkprotectedbyIEEE802.1x,networkdevicesmustauthenticatethemselves.The
authenticationisperformedbyanauthenticationserver,typicallyaRADIUSserver(forexample
FreeRADIUSandMicrosoftInternetAuthenticationServer).
