Overview

The BeaconMedæs Emergency Reserve Manifold (ERM) HTM02-01 is a critical component designed to serve as a secondary source of medical gas supply for piped distribution systems in healthcare facilities. Its primary function is to provide an emergency or reserve supply of medical gases, ensuring continuity of service during primary system failures or maintenance. The ERM is capable of supplying various medical gases, including Oxygen, Nitrous Oxide, O2/N2O 50%:50%, Medical Air, Surgical Air, Nitrogen, and Carbon Dioxide, depending on the specific configuration.

Function Description:

The ERM operates by automatically supplying medical gas to the pipeline if the primary supply system fails and the pipeline pressure drops to the ERM's set point. It is designed to be isolated from the distribution system by a lockable isolation valve, which should remain open during normal operation to allow for automatic activation. The system incorporates a two-stage pressure regulation process. The first stage pressure regulator, equipped with an inlet filter, ensures safe operation with regard to performance, mechanical strength, resistance to ignition in pure high-pressure oxygen supply, and cleanliness, conforming to BS EN ISO 10524-2. A pressure relief valve connected to this regulator protects the downstream pressure, set at 2000 kPa (20 bar). The second stage pressure regulator is a manually set diaphragm type, used to adjust the system pressure to suit typical nominal values for 4, 7, and 11 bar pipeline systems. Line pressure relief valves are preset to specific values (530 kPa for 400 kPa nominal, 1100 kPa for 700 kPa nominal, and 1300 kPa for 1100 kPa nominal) to protect the delivery system from over-pressurization in case of regulator failure, discharging to atmosphere.

The ERM is supplied as a 2x1 manifold configuration (one cylinder per bank) as standard, but can be upgraded to 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x5, or 2x6 manifolds using optional header extension kits to increase gas supply capacity. Each cylinder bank includes high-pressure isolation valves and cylinder pressure gauges, with contact gauges for signaling a reserve low alarm fault. The system also features an integral non-return valve assembly, a lockable isolation valve, a medical gas sampling test point (GEM 10), a test point isolation valve, and a pipeline connection point (22mm OD Copper Tube). A pressure relief exhaust connection point (28mm OD Copper Tube) is provided for safe discharge. A termination box for remote alarms is included, along with gas-specific non-return valves and chain hooks for cylinder restraint. Product labels with instructions for use are also provided.

  • Pressure Regulation: Two-stage system.
    • 1st Stage Pressure Regulator: Conforms to BS EN ISO 10524-2.
    • 1st Stage Pressure Relief Valve Set Point: 2000 kPa (20 bar).
    • 2nd Stage Pressure Regulator: Manually set diaphragm type for 4, 7, and 11 bar pipeline systems.
  • Line Pressure Relief Valve Set Points:
    • 530 kPa (5.3 bar) for 400 kPa nominal distribution.
    • 1100 kPa (11 bar) for 700 kPa nominal distribution.
    • 1300 kPa (13 bar) for 1100 kPa nominal distribution.
  • Standard Manifold Configuration: 2x1 (one cylinder per bank).
  • Expandability: Upgradable to 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x5, or 2x6 manifolds using extension kits.
  • Pipeline Connection: 22mm OD Copper Tube.
  • Pressure Relief Exhaust Connection: 28mm OD Copper Tube.
  • Weight: Typical ERM weight is 16kg. Extension brackets add 1.5kg (2x2) or 2.5kg (2x3+) per side.
  • Materials: Contains NO HALOGENATED polymers in the gas stream that may experience pressurized oxygen in excess of 3000 kPa (30 Bar).
  • Compliance: Designed and built in accordance with HTM 02-01 regulations and conforms to BS EN ISO 10524-2.

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Changeover: Automatically supplies gas to the pipeline if the primary supply fails and pipeline pressure drops to the ERM's set point.
  • Gas Specificity: Designed for specific medical gases, with gas ID stamped on header rails and tailpipe nuts to prevent cross-connection.
  • Alarm System: Equipped with reserve low alarm contact gauges to signal when running bank contents are typically below half.
  • Cylinder Handling: Includes chain hooks for cylinder restraint. Pin indexed clamp connections for tailpipes ensure correct cylinder connection.
  • Sampling Outlet: A medical gas sampling test point (GEM 10) and isolation valve are provided for system checks and depressurization.
  • Isolation Valves: Lockable isolation valves allow for isolation of the ERM from the distribution system and individual cylinder banks for maintenance or cylinder changes.
  • Pressure Gauges: Cylinder pressure gauges indicate full cylinder pressure, and a distribution system pressure gauge on the regulator allows for monitoring and adjustment of line pressure.
  • Modular Design: Header extension kits allow for easy expansion of cylinder capacity.

Maintenance Features:

  • Daily Inspection: Visual checks for correct function, damage, abnormal pressure readings, unusual noises or vibrations, and availability of replacement cylinders if the ERM is in operation.
  • Weekly Inspection: Check that all cylinders are properly secured and that batch labels are correct and in date.
  • Quarterly Inspection: Ensure primary manifold cylinders are full when the duty manifold is running, all system pressures are normal, alarms show "green," the automatic manifold main isolating valve is open, and the manifold is supplying the hospital. Check ERM safety valves for passing, and manifold non-return valves for leaks. Test the "reserve low" contact gauge.
  • 5-Year Replacement: Mandatory replacement of 1st and 2nd stage relief valves every 5 years. BeaconMedæs recommends replacing industrial regulators during this overhaul to minimize supply interruption. Overhaul kits are available, including non-return valves, seals, washers, and outlet capsules.
  • Component Replacement Procedures: Detailed instructions are provided for replacing various components, including:
    • Line non-return valve (P/N: 2005778)
    • Sampling outlet (various part numbers depending on gas type)
    • 2nd stage regulator (P/N: 2005689, 2005690, 2005691)
    • 1st stage regulator
    • 2nd stage relief valve (P/N: 2000122, 2000123, 2000140)
    • 1st stage relief valve (P/N: 2005384)
    • High pressure bank valve (P/N: 2005820)
    • Cylinder header non-return valves (various part numbers depending on gas type)
    • Line pressure gauge (P/N: 2005765, 2005766, 2005767)
    • Cylinder contents contact gauge (P/N: 2005772, 2005773)
  • Safety Precautions: Emphasizes the use of genuine BeaconMedæs spare parts, ensuring no contaminants (oil, grease) come into contact with gas connections, and adherence to "PERMIT TO WORK" procedures for installations and maintenance. Brazing must be fluxless with nitrogen purge.
  • Purging: Installation must be purged as per HTM 02-01 for UK installations or relevant international standards.
  • Environmental Protection: Unit and components can be discarded in standard refuse facilities as they do not contain hazardous substances.

The manual provides comprehensive guidance for installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance, ensuring the ERM functions reliably as a critical emergency medical gas supply system.
