3.7 Engine Instrumentation
The helm station is equipped with a set of engine
instruments and/or alarms. These instruments
allow the operator to monitor the operational con-
dition of the engine. Close observation of these
instruments allows the operator to operate the
engine at the most ecient level and could save
it from serious costly damage.
Most Blackn boats are equipped with a Yamaha
engine and a Command Link
®
Plus LCD multifunc-
tion display or a Mercury engine with a VesselView
4 display. These systems can be integrated with
the optional electronic navigation equipment in-
stalled on your boat.
A brief description of the gauges and their basic
functions integrated in these display systems are
listed in this section. Other functions that are de-
pendent on the electronics installed on your boat
may be available. Refer to the engine and display
system owner’s manuals and the manuals for
the electronics installed on your boat for detailed
information on the operation of the instruments
and additional functions available.
Remember, the instrumentation is unique to the
type of outboard motor installed on your Blackn.
Some or all of the following gauges may be
present.
Tachometer
The tachometer displays the speed of the engine
in revolutions per minute (RPM). This speed is
not the boat speed or necessarily the speed of
the propeller.
NEVER EXCEED THE MAXIMUM RECOMMENDED OPERATION
RPM OF THE ENGINE. MAINTAINING MAXIMUM OR CLOSE
TO MAXIMUM RPM FOR EXTENDED PERIODS CAN REDUCE
THE LIFE OF THE ENGINE.
Some tachometers have an LCD screen that digi-
tally displays data for specic engine systems and
for functions of some optional equipment. Keys
below the display allow the operator to scroll
through modes and available data monitored by
the display. The functions monitored will vary
depending on the engine and other optional equip-
ment installed on your boat.
