Machine control module (MCM)
An electronic panel that contains the memory and
circuitry to control the operation of the wrapper auto-
matically
The MCM uses information from sensors to manipulate
wrapper components correctly
mandrel shaft
The roller on which the lm roll is mounted. Also called
the parent roll�
monitor
To keep close watch over a process or a system� To ob-
serve, supervise, regulate, and/or record the activities
of a machine or line�
non-operator side
The side of a machine or line opposite the side where
the operator usually stands�
operator side
The side of a machine or line where the operator usu-
ally stands� Most operator controls face this side of
the machine�
packaging
The area in a production facility where product is
placed into a container or package�
pallet
A wooden platform on which product or packages are
stacked for moving or storage�
palletizer
A machine that stacks product or packages onto
wooden platforms�
parameter
A range of measurable factors, such as temperature or
pressure, that dene a system.
photoeye
An electronic sensor that detects the presence or
absence of an object by detecting the presence or
absence of light�
pneumatic
A device that uses compressed air to perform its work
and movements�
proximity sensor
An electronic sensor that monitors the closeness of an
object without actually touching the object� In some
cases, a proximity sensor might be called a proximity
switch�
proximity switch
An electronic sensor that detects the presence or
absence of an object without actually touching the ob-
ject� In some cases, a proximity switch may be called a
proximity sensor
psi
A measure of pressure representing pounds per square
inch�
purge
To ush out or purify a system. Often to empty a ma-
chine or system of all product�
recipe
A preset program that controls the functions of a ma-
chine or line automatically�
A recipe contains most of the information needed to
run a specic product so that the information does not
have to be input every time the product is run�
refeed
To feed again� Often, to place back onto the line good
product that has been taken off the line during gaps in
product ow.
registration mark
A colored block on the lm that is detected by the lm
registration photoeye� Registration marks are spaced
exactly one package length apart�
reject
An undesirable or damaged product or package�
sensor
A device, such as a photoeye or a limit switch, that
responds to a signal or stimulation�
