A predetermined setting on a device�

The position or assembly of a device, object, or system
so as to facilitate a desired outcome of an operation�

solenoid
A current-carrying coil of wire with a moveable center
core, usually in the shape of a cylinder� When the coil
of wire receives electrical current it acts as a magnet,
drawing the core into the coil and creating a small
movement�
solvent
A liquid used to clean machinery or components� A
solvent dissolves a substance, such as grease, and
converts
it to a liquid�
tag
A tag provides protection by holding an energy isola-
tion device in the safe position, thus preventing the
equipment from becoming energized�
tension
The stress caused when a material, such as lm, is
extended, stretched, or pulled tight�
tolerance
The maximum permissible deviation from a specied
standard�
trailing edge
The upstream edge of a product or package�
upstream
In or toward the beginning stages of a machine or
packaging line�
valve
A device that regulates the ow of gases, liquids, or
loose materials through a pipe, tube, or opening�
value
An assigned or calculated numerical quantity; an
amount�
variable
A factor that is likely to change or vary because it has
no xed quantitative value. For example, time can be a
variable during the cycle of a machine�
volume
The amount of space that is lled by a three-dimen-
sional object� Volume is expressed in terms of cubic
units�
width
The measure of the base of an object along its second
greatest dimension� Usually a measure of how wide
something is�
wipedown
The process on a packaging line whereby machinery is
wiped off during cleaning�

A packaging machine that encloses units of product in
