4. CONDITIONS AND LIMITATIONS ON THE
USE OF THE BEACON
IMPORTANT: To avoid delaying rescue in case of an emergency,
PLBs must be registered at the time of purchase with the
national authority having jurisdiction or, for countries that
allow it, directly on the online International 406 MHz Beacon
Registration Database (IBRD) at www.406registration.com.
Through its sales network, Breitling encourages and facilitates
this by offering each purchaser immediate registration.
Each PLB has a Unique Identification Number (UIN) also called
Hex ID, which is part of the transmitted signal and makes it
possible to retrieve contact information for both the owner
and a contact person. The UIN, which includes the country
code and the beacon’s serial number, is engraved on the back
of the watch.
The beacon must be registered in the owner’s country of resi-
dence. If this changes, the beacon must be reprogrammed
exclusively by Breitling with the new country code.
The beacon-watch’s owner is responsible for informing the
national authority having jurisdiction about any change in
the registration information. In particular, if the watch is
given or sold to someone else. For his part, the new owner
must register his beacon. If the watch is stolen, the authorities
must immediately be informed.
A PLB is a survival instrument and should be activated only in
case of a real emergency. Any misuse may be sanctioned by a
fine and may result in substantial costs for the user including,
among others, repayment of costs for the search triggered
by receipt of the distress signal.
The consequences of any such act (that may entail legal pro
-
ceedings) shall be entirely borne by the owner of the watch
– including in the event of misuse by a third party. Neither
Breitling SA nor the distributor of the transmitter may thus
be held responsible for such consequences.
5. USE OF THE BEACON IN CASE OF DISTRESS
5.1 Activating the transmitter and deploying the antenna
IMPORTANT: As a safety measure and to discourage misuse
of the beacon, the Emergency has been designed to be used
once only. Extending the antenna activates the transmission
automatically, which then continues until the battery is
completely discharged.
Once used, the Emergency will need to be returned to an
authorized Breitling service center in order to render it
operational again. In addition to performing standard watch
tests, this will involve in particular replacing the battery
and the antenna and checking that the electronics of the
transmitter are working properly.
In the event of legitimate use of the transmitter, justified
by a situation of distress and certified by an official rescue
organization, this reconditioning will be performed free of
charge.
In case of misuse, the reconditioning cost will be at least
equivalent to half the recommended retail price of the
watch.
Note: The watch and the transmitter are independent.
Any damage to the watch as a result of a crash does not
necessarily mean that the PLB is out of use.
