TheUKGovernmenthasintroducedEVchargingregulationstoensurethatconsumers
are protected and tackle the rising demand for electricity.
The rules apply to the electric vehicle private charge points which are sold for use in a
domestic or workplace environment in Great Britain.
These measures are designed to help manage increasing electricity demand from the
UK’stransitiontoelectricvehicles(EVs)andimprovesecurityprotocols.Theregulation
details are as follows:
• Phase1oftheUKgovernment’sElectricVehicle(SmartChargePoints)Regulations
2021 came into force on 30 June 2022 and included -
- Randomised delay
- Loss of communications network access
- Default Charge settings
• OnDecember2022,Phase2ofUKregulationscameintoeffectnowincludingbuilt-
in cyber security features -
- Tamper boundary protection
- Event logs for user privacy and data protection
