Eachsucceedinglowerterraceis startedby walkingbelowthe
terraceyouarepreparing.Foraddedstabilityofthetiller,always
keepthe uphillwheelin the soft,newlytilledsoil.Donottill the
last 12"or moreof thedownhilloutsideedgeofeach terrace.This
untilledstriphelpspreventtheterracesfrombreakingapart and
washingdownhill.Italso providesa walkingpathbetweenthe
rOWS.
Loading & Unloading the Tiller
Loadingandunloadingthetillerintoa vehicleis potentiallyhazard-
Ious anddoingsois not recommendedunlessabsolutelynecessary,
las thiscould resultin personalinjuryorpropertydamage.
Ifyoumustloadorunloadthetiller,followthe guidelinesgivenbelow:
• Beforeloadingorunloadingthetiller,stopthe engine,waitforall
partsto stopmoving,disconnectthesparkplugwireandlet the
engineand mufflercool.
• The tilleris tooheavyand bulkyto besafelyliftedbyone person.
Twoor morepeopleshouldsharethe load.
• Usesturdyrampsand manually-- withtheengineshutoff-- roll
thetiller intoandout ofthe vehicle.Twoor morepeopleare
neededtodo this.
• The rampsmustbe strongenoughto supportthecombined
weightofthe tillerandanyhandlers.The rampsshouldprovide
goodtractionto preventslipping;theyshouldalsohavesiderails
toguidethe tilleralongthe ramps;andtheyshouldhavea locking
deviceto securethemtothe vehicle.
• The handlersshouldwearsturdyfootwearthatwillhelpto prevent
slipping.
• Positiontheloadingvehiclesothatthe rampangleis as flat
as possible(thelessinclineto theramp,the better).Turnthe
vehicle'sengineoff andapplytheparkingbrake.
• Whengoinguptheramps,standin thenormaloperatingposition
and pushthetilleraheadof you.Havea personateach sideto
turnthe wheels.
• Whengoingdownthe ramps,walkbackwardwiththe tiller
followingyou.Keepalertfor anyobstaclesbehindyou.Positiona
personateachwheelto controlthespeedofthe tiller.Nevergo
downthe rampstiller-first,asthe tillercouldtipforward.
• Placewoodenblockson thedownhillsideof thewheelsif you
needtostopthe tillerfromrollingdowntheramp.Also,usethe
blockstotemporarilykeepthe tillerin placeon the ramps(if
necessary),andto chockthe wheelsin placeafterthe tilleris in
thevehicle.
• Afterloadingthe tiller,preventitfromrollingchockingthe wheels
with blocksandsecurelytiethe tillerdown.
