Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the CURT Double Lock Gooseneck hitch, models 60607 and 60636. It provides detailed information on the installation, operation, and maintenance of these gooseneck hitches, designed for towing heavy loads with trucks.

Function Description

The CURT Double Lock Gooseneck hitch is a towing device that allows a truck to pull a gooseneck trailer. It features a "Turnover Ball" design, meaning the hitch ball can be inverted and stored in the hitch cylinder when not in use, providing a flat truck bed surface. The "Double Lock" aspect likely refers to a secure locking mechanism for the hitch ball, ensuring it remains in place during towing. The system includes components for attaching safety chains, which are a critical safety feature for gooseneck towing.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual provides specific part numbers and descriptions for the various components of the hitch, including:

  • Safety Chain Loop Assembly (CM-C60-CLA): Consists of a 2" x 3" safety chain loop (CM-C60-CL), U-bolt springs (CM-C60-S), 1/2" nylock hex nuts (12-13), and 1/2" SAE flat washers (FW12SAE).
  • Turnover Ball Complete (CM-C60-B): This is the main hitch ball component.
  • Cast Lock Pin (CM-C600-CLP): Secures the hitch ball in place.
  • Handle Rod (CM-C60-R): A 3/75" rod used to operate the locking pin.
  • Compression Spring (CM-C60-CS): A 7.5 lb spring for the handle rod mechanism.
  • Vinyl Handle Grip (CM-C60-H): Provides a comfortable grip for the handle rod.
  • Rubber Cover (CM-C60-RC): Used to cover the hitch ball opening when the ball is inverted or removed, protecting the mechanism and providing a clean bed surface.
  • U-Shaped Edging (CM-UE1): A 0.300" edging for the cut hole in the truck bed.
  • Chrome Ring (CM-C600-CR): A 3.75" diameter x 0.375" chrome ring, likely for aesthetic finishing around the bed hole.

Hardware Torque Specifications:

  • All 1/2" hardware: 110 ft-lbs.
  • 3/8" hardware: 45 ft-lbs.
  • 9/16" hardware: 150 ft-lbs.
  • 5/8" hardware: 210 ft-lbs.
  • 3/4" hardware: 380 ft-lbs.
  • 1" fasteners (for model 60636): 300 ft-lbs.

Truck Compatibility (Model 60636):

  • 80-96 Ford 1/2, 3/4, & 1 Ton Trucks
  • 97-98 Ford 3/4 & 1 Ton Trucks
  • Compatible with both long and short bed models, and with or without overload springs.

Hole Location in Truck Bed:

  • The manual specifies drilling a 4" (or 3 5/8" for C-630/C-640) hole in the truck bed.
  • For model 60636, the center point for the drill hole is 4"-5" in front of the axle.
  • For model 60607, the safety chain attachment holes must be drilled in the lower rib section of the truck bed.

Clearance Warnings:

  • A minimum clearance of 6" is required between the bottom of the trailer overhang and the top of the truck box sides.
  • The manual includes a "Cab to Trailer Clearance" calculator to determine if the trailer will interfere with the truck cab, especially for short bed models or trailers with overhangs.
  • Crucial Warning: "DO NOT invert ball when carrying heavy loads on 2 wheel drive trucks. The ball may hit the top of the differential, brake lines, or sensors." This is further emphasized for "any Toyota Tundra Models."

Usage Features

Installation Process: The installation involves several steps, including:

  1. Preparation: Examining the truck for fuel lines, brake lines, and electrical wires that may need repositioning. Heat shields may also need modification or removal.
  2. Bed Hole Drilling: Accurately marking and drilling a 4" hole in the truck bed for the hitch cylinder.
  3. Cross Arm and Center Section Installation: Positioning the gooseneck hitch's center section and cross arms over the rear axle, securing them with carriage bolts and flange nuts. An overhead lifting device can be used to facilitate this.
  4. Safety Chain Attachment Installation: Drilling holes for and installing the U-bolt safety chain attachments in the truck bed.
  5. Handle/Lock Installation: Assembling the locking pin, handle rod, compression spring, and vinyl grip, then securing them to the hitch.
  6. Sideplate Installation (Model 60636): Attaching sideplates to the truck frame and cross arms, with specific instructions for trucks with and without overload springs. This may involve cutting a bed floor flange notch.

Operation of the Turnover Ball:

  1. Disengaging: Pull the handle out as far as possible and rotate it clockwise until the locking pin is disengaged and locked out.
  2. Inserting Ball: Insert the hitch ball into the cylinder, aligning the ball groove with the cylinder pin. Rotate the ball if necessary until it drops into place.
  3. Engaging: Rotate the handle counter-clockwise until the locking pin snaps back into position, ensuring it passes completely through the ball and securely into the cylinder.

Installation Check:

  • Verify the ball is in the towing position and the handle is locked.
  • Connect the trailer to the hitch ball.
  • Check for adequate truck box clearance (minimum 6") and clearance at cab and box corners.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and reliable operation of the gooseneck hitch. It is recommended to perform these checks every 30 days or prior to each use:

  1. Lubrication: Keep the hitch ball regularly lubricated using silicone spray or an equivalent product to prevent wear and rust.
  2. Cleanliness: Keep the entire hitch assembly free of dirt and other foreign debris.
  3. Torque Check: Check for proper torque on all nuts and bolts before each use. The manual provides specific torque values for different hardware sizes.
  4. Wear Check: Check the hitch ball for excessive wear. The manual explicitly states: "Do not tow trailer with worn or damaged parts."
