Introduction
REGULATORY FRAMEWORK
Each employer shall make sure to
protect workers in regards to
health and safety at their work
place (European Directive
89/391/CEE).
In particular, for companies
where EXplosive ATmosphère are
likely to happen, site managers
shall comply with the European
Directive 1999/92/CE (User
Directive). This directive defines how
zones where workers are potentially
subjected to the risks linked to an
ATEX shall be classified, depending
upon the frequency and the duration
of their occurence:
ATEX
Probability
High Medium and
low
Very Low
Definitions A place in which
an explosive
gas atmosphere
is present
continuously or
for long periods.
A place in which
an explosive
atmosphere is
likely
to occur
during normal
operation.
A place in which
an explosive
atmosphere
is not likely
to occur
during normal
operation, but
if it does occur,
it will persist
for a short
period only
(foreseeable
abnormal
operation).
