ERGON BIKE ERGONOMICS
Fore / Aft positioning of the cleat
For efficient power transfer from your muscles the cleat should be positioned
so that the pedal axle is under the ball of the foot. To do this while wearing
shoes, simply find the joint at the base of your big toe. In general the big toe
joint is at the widest part of the foot. Mark this point using an Ergon Reference
Point sticker. The arrow should point directly down at the reference line for the
pedal axle as marked on the TP1.
Expert Tip:
Depending on the type of riding that you do and the cadence the Fore / Aft
position of the cleat can vary from the above. For riders with a high cadence
(for example track or criterium riders) benefit can be had from a more forward
position, and for lower cadences (for example for MTBing or Triathlon) a more
backward position has advantages.
The precise orientation of the cleat as described is related to the big toe joint.
This is not straight across, but at an angle. For this reason basic installation of
the cleat is slightly rear of this point. This reduces the load on the arch of the
foot and the calf muscles. Any type of riding that may involve off bike hiking or
running (triathlon, duathlon, MTB or cyclocross) therefore benefits. Anyone
suffering from problems with the arch of the foot or with the calf muscles may
benefit from experimenting with the Fore / Aft adjustment of the cleat.
