Servos
What is a servo?
A servo is a device that is able to transform control commands into mechan-
ical motions.
Types
In model making we speak of analog and digital servos. In an analog servo
the electronic equipment features an analog structure. In a digital servo the
position of the motor is detected in the form of a numerical value and com-
pared with a desired value by an appropriate computing circuit. Digital ser-
vos feature a higher angular resolution and their position is adjusted more
quickly and more accurately. Digital servos can often be reprogrammed,
which allows to adapt the speed, the overload protection and similar to the
specific application, depending on the servo version. However, the auxil-
iary energy required by digital servos as well as their price are higher than
those of analog servos.
Structure
A servo is composed of a drive unit and a triggering unit such as for instance
an electric motor with electronic control system. The motor must be able
to rotate in both directions, and the system must be able to determine the
rotating position of the motor at any moment. The electric connection of a
servo is carried out using three wires. Two for the operating voltage (“plus”
and “minus”) and one for the pulse (“Desired value”).
