out the response if using, say, two different distortion types. The low-gain distortion can be
followed with a Compressor to even out its response compared to a high-gain distortion. Otherwise
the low-gain distortion will be too dynamic.
Parameters
TYPE - The Axe-Fx contains two different algorithms for the compressor: feedforward and
feedback. The
TYPE
parameter selects which algorithm is used. STUDIO selects the feedforward
algorithm and
PEDAL selects the feedback algorithm. The feedforward algorithm simulates the
behavior of popular high-end studio compressors whilst the feedback algorithm simulates the
behavior of classic “stomp box” compressor pedals.
DYN ATTK - Turns off|on the Dynamic Attack filter. When the Dynamic Attack filter is on the
attack rate varies according to the program material. Fast transients will cause a faster attack.
LOOK-AHEAD - Sets the amount of time the compressor looks ahead into the data stream. Look-
ahead can be used to reduce popping on transient sources and is especially effective on guitar and
other percussive instruments.
MIX - Sets the ratio of wet (compressed) and dry.
THRSH - Threshold control. The Compressor reduces its gain when the input power exceeds this
value.
RATIO - Sets the gain reduction ratio. This is the ratio of input power to output power beyond the
threshold. For example, if the threshold is -40 dB, the input signal is -30 dB and the ratio is 2.0 the
output will be -35 dB.
ATT - Attack rate. Sets how fast the Compressor reduces its gain once the threshold is exceeded.
Higher values equal faster response. In general the attack rate should be set to be similar to the
attack rate of the material. For guitar, a fast attack rate tends to work best.
REL - Release rate. Sets how fast the Compressor restores the gain once the signal has fallen below
the threshold. In general the release rate should be set slightly faster than the release rate of the
program material. An easy way to set the release rate is to strum a chord and watch the decay rate
on the gain reduction meter. Set the release rate so that the decay is slightly faster than the natural
decay. For guitar, a release rate of approximately 3.0 is recommended. High release rates can cause
pumping and distortion when used in conjunction with high compression ratios and should be
avoided.
LEVEL - Sets the output level of the block. This is the same control as on the MIX page.
KNEE - Sets the "knee" type. A soft knee gradually varies the compression ratio around the
threshold whereas a hard knee switches from no compression to the selected compression ratio
abruptly at the threshold. With high compression ratios a hard knee may produce undesirable
artifacts. In this case set the knee type to
SOFT.
MAKEUP - Makeup gain. When this is on, the output level is automatically compensated allowing
for easier adjustment. The
LEVEL control can then be used to fine tune the output level.
