The Effects
29
DETECT - Selects the type of detector: RMS, Peak or RMS + Peak. RMS detection is smoother and
generally used to even out the level of the program material over a long period of time. Peak
detection is fast and is generally used to limit the peaks of the program material. Peak detection is
the most common type for use with guitar. The RMS + Peak detector combines the best attributes
of both: the speed of a peak detector and the smoothness of an RMS detector.
FILTER - Sets the frequency of a highpass filter on the sidechain input. Raising the frequency can
help prevent low frequencies from “pumping” the entire mix.
SCSEL - Selects the sidechain input source.
NONE
is the normal setting and selects the block input
(sum of the rows feeding the block) as the sidechain source. The other settings allow isolating a
single row as the sidechain input. The other rows are summed as usual. By using a row as the
sidechain input you can use the compressor as a ducker or de-esser. You can also choose either of
the main inputs as sidechain sources, i.e. Input 1 or Input 2.
Gate / Expander (Ultra Only)
The expander module is sort of a “compressor in reverse”. When the signal level is below the
threshold the gain is reduced. The Gate / Expander block can be used as a gate or expander (as the
name suggests).
Parameters
THRSH - Threshold control. The Gate / Expander reduces its gain when the input power is below
this value.
ATT - Attack time. Sets how fast the Gate / Expander restores the gain once the threshold is
exceeded. Lower values equal faster response.
HOLD - Hold time. Sets how long the Gate / Expander holds the gate open once the threshold has
been exceeded.
REL - Release time. Sets how fast the Gate / Expander reduces the gain once the signal has fallen
below the threshold.
