Even today, robocs remains a technology accessible only to few. The reasons for
this are the high costs, dicult programming and the separaon of humans and
robots by safety fences. So how can this complex technology be made accessible
to the general populaon?
We at Franka Emika GmbH, the high-tech company from Munich, want to solve
this problem.
To us, the ideal robot of the future is a tool which can be used by anybody and
which supports humans in carrying out unpleasant or even dangerous tasks. Pan-
da is the rst system of an enrely new generaon of tools, which are developed
with the following main objecves: rst as a research robot, then as a colleague in
a factory and nally as an assistant in daily life for elderly or sick people.
We presented the Panda “power tool” at the Hannover trade fair 2017. The sys-
tem can be operated via Apps like a smartphone and be taught new Tasks within
a few minutes, without requiring any programming skills. At the same me the
system is sensive to such an extent, that it can take over assembling, tesng or
inspecng tasks next to a human colleague without the need for a safety fence.
The online plaorm Franka World represents the center of this ecosystem, in
which the community can interact, developers and clients can be assigned and
new soluons and applicaons are provided.
The system was developed based on the globally leading German robot technol-
ogy, and is now produced in series in Allgäu, Bavaria. Panda research has been
ready for use for the research community since August 2017; later in 2018 it be-
came ready for use in industry, and this is only the beginning of a new generaon
of universal tools.
Panda – designed, developed and made in Germany.
