Power supply
In its basic configuration, the server has a hot-pluggable power supply unit that
adjusts automatically to any power voltage in the range from 100 V to 240 V. As
an option, the power supply can be expanded with an extra power supply unit to
create a redundant power supply. If a power supply unit fails, the redundant
configuration assures continued operation. The defective power supply unit can
be replaced during operation (for further details see section "Hot-plug power
supply units" on page 86).
Cooling
The Cool-safe™ cooling concept with improved air flow cooling technology
(honeycomb design) ensures the highest possible performance of the
processors at work; at the same time, the system is extremely reliable thanks to
the reduced heat dissipation.
The server is cooled by either one or two rows of fans (redundant). In the
standard setup, one row of fans with five hot-plug fans is installed. If two rows of
fans are installed, each of them forms a redundant unit.
Defective fans can be replaced during operation (for further details see
"Replacing the hot-plug fan modules" on page 97). In a redundant configuration
up to five fans may fail, provided that no two of them are behind each other.
Each processor has a heat sink.
High level of availability and data security
When memory data is accessed, 1-bit errors are identified in the main memory
and automatically corrected with the error correcting code (ECC) method. The
patented memory scrubbing function regularly starts up the EDC mechanism,
ensuring continuous data integrity.
The memory modules used support SDDC technology (Chipkill™), which
further increases the effectiveness of memory error monitoring and correction.
