7-5 ZETACO Controller Hanging the System
Symptoms
The ZETACO optical disk controller can hang the MV7800 CT computer chassis.
Troubleshooting Suggestion
If the computer chassis is powered up with some peripherals already powered up, a small voltage can appear on
the CPU backplane causing the controller’s RAM to remain intact. This will cause the computer to hang. To
remedy this situation, turn the power completely off the computer bay, including the peripherals, then power-up
the computer chassis FIRST.
7-6 Mag Tape Errors
Symptoms
The tape, using a mag tape drive, loads properly until the end or near the end of the tape is reached. When the
tape is rewound, the tape is sucked into the supply vacuum chamber. The power supply board, the read/write
board, the vacuum transducer and the supply and take-up reel servos have been replaced to try to remedy the
problem with no solution.
Troubleshooting Suggestions
1. Check the supply hub rubber ring. If the ring is worn, the reel will slip, especially if the reel is full. The tape
will be drawn into the vacuum chamber. Replacing the ring should remedy this problem.
2. Check and replace the vacuum drive belt in the back of the drive if it is faulty.
3. Check all the idler rollers and clean out all the sensor holes. The problem could also be in the reel motor not
being able to respond fast enough to the capstan speed. Also check that the reel clamp is holding the reel
tight, it may be slipping.
4. Check for a pushed pin in one of the plugs that go to the power pan assembly. Also check the power pan
assembly for problems.
Symptoms
The problem exists in the tape drives. The drive rewinds to the beginning of the tape after every image. Then it
will go to where it left off and continue archiving. The NRZI has been replaced to try to remedy the problem.
Troubleshooting Suggestions
1. Check for a bad tape. Many times a bad tape message will be posted when a bad tape is used.
2. Mag tape vendors were switched and problems arose with the reading of certain mag tape brands. Change
the mag head to fix the problem
3. The same symptoms appear on drives where the capstan slips, then grabs the tape and slings it off the
capstan. This popping usually happens as the system writes a header after an image has been stored and
before the next image is stored.
4. Try archiving to an old LFC tape. This should work with no problems. Next, set up the read gains on the
brand of tape the customer is using for archiving images. When the tape is being written to and read from
the R/W head gets an error in the record and attempts to rewrite the record during the write operation. After
some time, the mag tape rewinds to count the records over and retry the archive of the images.
