CAUTION
BEFORE
CONNECTING
POWER
TO
THIS
INSTRUMENT,
be
sure
the
line
voltage
switch
on
the
rear
panel
of
the
instrument
is
set
properly
and
the
cor-
rect
fuse
is
installed
.

Line
Voltage
Selection
Before
setting
instrument
power
switch
to
ON
position,
verify
that
the
fuse
module
is
in
the
correct
position
for
the
line
voltage
.
The
fuse
module
is
located
in
the
line
fil-
ter/power
switch
module
on
the
rear
panel
of
the
instrument
.
if
the
arrow
beside
the
voltage
on
the
fuse
module
that
is
in-line
with
the
filter
arrow
does
not
match
line
voltage
to
be
used,
it
must
be
changed
.
To
select
the
proper
fuse
for
line
2-2
voltage,
gently pry out
fuse
module
with
a
flat-blade
screwdriver
.
To
use
other
fuse
in
module,
turn
fuse
module
and
reinsert
into
the
line
filter
module
.

CABLE
WARNING
BEFORE
CONNECTING
THIS
INSTRUMENT,
the
protective
earth
terminal
of
the
instrument
must
be
connected
to
the
protective
conductor
of
the
(Mains)
power
cord
.
The
Mains
plug
must
be
inserted
in
a
socket
out-
let
provided
with
a
protective earth
contact
.
The
protective
action
must
not
be
negated
by
the,
use
of
an
exten-
sion
cord
(power
cable)
without a
protective
conductor
(grounding)
.
Grounding
one
conductor
of
a
two
conductor
outlet
does
not
provide
an
instrument
ground
.
This
instrument
is
provided
with
a
three-wire
power
cable
.
When
connected
to
an ap-
propriate
AC
power
outlet,
this
cable
grounds
the
instrument
cabinet
.
The
type
of
power
cable plug
shipped
with
the
instrument
depends
on
the
country
of
destination
.

POWER
After
applying
power
to
the
HP
54501A,
an
in-
ternal
selftest
may
be
performed
by
following
the
procedure
in
section
3
.
If
the
message
"cal
ram
checksum
error
re-cal
instrument"
is
dis-
played
at
the
top
of
the
screen,
refer
to
HP
54501A
SELF
CALIBRATION
in
section
4
of
this
manual
.

CLEANING
REQUIREMENTS
Use
MILD
SOAP
AND
WATER
to
clean
the
HP
54501A
cabinet
and
front
panel
.
Care
must
be
taken
not
to
use
a
harsh
soap
which
will
damage
the
water-base
paint
finish
of
the
instrument
.
