The following is a quick guide to diagnosing, and repairing, faults on
the HP 8153A.
1. Turn the instrument off.
2. Remove any modules.
3. Turn the instrument on again and watch the display, The
following should appear:
a. The full display is on for approximately 1 secondo
b.
SELFTE;T ~:;ELFTE::n
is displayed for less than half a secondo
C.
t'10DE= t'lH1U ~:;'y'~:;
TU:::
otlL'y',
and possibly some other
HP-IB status indicators are displayed in the status bar.
The following Error Messages can occur:
KE'y' ,JAt-1
This is normally caused by a key sticking on
the front panel. The solution is to replace the front
panel assembly, AIOO.
This error indicates that a register of the realtime
clock, U406, cannot be read. Go to "Troubleshooting
the Al Processor Board".
4. li the display stays dark and the fan is not running, check
the line fuse, FIDI,
the voltage suppressor diode VSIOO on the power supply board,
and
E4006
E4030
the supply voltages.
(see "Troubleshooting the A3 Power Supply Board" for further
details)
5. li only one DC Voltage is missing, check the corresponding voltage
suppressor diode (VSI02, VSI03, VS122, VSI23).
6. li the power supply voltages are correct continue with Processor
Board Troubleshooting.
7. li Applications are lost after power off, check the Battery Buffered
RAM Supply.
8. li the display stays dark but the power supply voltages are correct,
check the Vacuum Fluoresence Display (VFD) Voltage Supply.
CHECK THAT THE INSTRUMENT IS NOT SET TO FREE
RUN MODE (see "Running in Free Run Mode").
