ALIGNMENT.
1. Preliminary Print Shaft Timing - With the cycle shaft
latched in its rest position, loosen t'he print shaft gear
and rotate the print shaft so that the keyway is approxi-
matelyin linewiththeendof the ribbon lift cam follower
pivot screw (Fig. 106). The keyway will be about 45°
to the rear from the top of the shaft.

The
preliminary setting of the print shaft establishes a
coarse timing of the two detent entry and withdrawal so
that the detents wi II not be engaged in their notches when
the type head and ti It ring are in motion. A more accu-
rate timing adjustment will be made later.
Tilt Selector Latches - Formthetwostoplugs(Fig. 107)
above the tilt selector latches so that the latches will re-
setsimultoneously(underthe latch bail) just as the cycle
cl utch check pawl drops into the notch on the check rat-
chet at the rest position (Fig. 108).
The adjustment can easily be checked by hand cyclinga
zero-tilt character twice in succession. As the cycle shaft
begins to pass its rest position, place yourfinger lightly

againstthe cycle clutch check pawl while observing the
selector latches. If the adjustment is correct you should
feel the check pawl drop into the rest position notch on
the check ratchet simultaneously as the two selector
latches reset under the latch bail.
Form the stop lugs by tapping them up or down with a
hammer and S"crewdriver. The stop lugs should be over-
formed sl ightl y then brought back to the correct position,
otherwise the "memory" of the metal wi II cause them to
restore toward their original position.
