8.1 Commissioning, Operation, and Maintenance
Basic requirements
Technical staff must be trained to understand the requirements and principles of
designing and operating safety‑related systems.
Execution and maintenance personnel must be trained on the requirements and
principles of designing and operating safety‑related systems.
Operators must be trained to understand the requirements and principles of
designing and operating safety‑related systems.
The safety‑related circuit on the control board that fails to operate must be
replaced with a new one as it is not repairable.
Commissioning checklist
IEC 61508, EN IEC 62061, and EN ISO 13849 require the equipment to pass acceptance
tests to verify the operation of safety functions. Acceptance testing must be
performed at the following stages:
Initial startup of the safety functions
After any changes related to safety functions (wiring, assembly, settings, or other
related operations)
After any maintenance work related to safety functions is completed
Acceptance testing of safety functions must be performed by personnel with safety
function expertise and must be documented and signed by the testers. Technical staff
and operation, maintenance, and repair personnel must be trained to understand the
requirements and principles of designing and operating safety‑related systems.
The signed acceptance test report must be kept in the log of the equipment. The
report shall include documentation of start‑up activities and test results, fault reports,
and troubleshooting records. Any new acceptance tests due to changes or
maintenance shall be recorded in the log.
Verification and confirmation

the implementation meets specified safety requirements.
SIL/PL level compliance
Verification of the functional safety system proves and confirms that the
implemented safety system meets the requirements defined for each stage.
