Usage Features

Computer and Software Installation

The CL-Profiler requires a computer with Windows 2000, XP, VISTA, or Windows 7, with a minimum of 100MB free disk space and 512MB RAM. One or two free USB ports are needed, and using a USB hub is not recommended as it can decrease sensor performance. The device should only be connected to the USB port after software installation to ensure the USB driver is installed first. The setup file can be run from a CD or downloaded from www.cl-profiler.com. After installation, the computer must be restarted. For users with administrator limitations, the USB plug must be connected to activate the USB driver, and Windows should search for the driver. The "CL-profiler" file on the C drive should not be limited.

Registration

To start the software, navigate to the Windows start menu, select "Programs," then "CL-Profiler," or use a desktop shortcut. If unregistered, a pop-up will appear. Registration requires internet access to obtain an installation code from http://www.cl-profiler.com/registration.aspx. After entering personal information on the webpage, an installation code will be sent via email. This code, along with the same personal information, must be entered into the software while the CL-Profiler is connected to the computer. Registration is based on personal information and the CL-Profiler serial number, meaning re-registration is required if a different CL-Profiler is connected.

Software Interface and Settings

The main screen features several options:

  1. Language Selection: Choose your preferred language. If a language is not listed, contact Mersen France Amiens.
  2. Settings: This section allows for various adjustments:
    • General: Configure unit (µm or mil) and date notation (Windows default, DD/MM/YYYY, or MM/DD/YYYY).
    • Own Logo: Personalize the software with your company logo, which will appear on the main menu and reports. The logo image (JPG, BMP, PNG) should not exceed 320x75 pixels.
    • ViRoTi (Virtual Roller Tip): This tool is used for profiling grooved slip rings and commutators. It calculates the necessary clamp distance (C) based on the measure part (A) and groove width (B). To use it, activate the ViRoTi option in settings.
    • CL-Profiler Software Update: Check for and automatically update the probe's software. It is crucial not to disconnect the probe during an update to avoid irreversible damage.

Linear Measurement

Accessed via button (3) on the main screen, this mode displays sensor position on a graph.

  • Slider (1): Indicates the sensor's current location. For lower noise, position the sensor close to the zero point.
  • Y-scale (2): Offers "Zero Startpoint" (uses the start point as zero) or "Sensor position" (absolute value). "Auto scale" adjusts the graph to fit the measurement; otherwise, the Y-range can be manually selected.
  • Recording (3): Set the recording time. Measurements can be stopped with the "STOP" button (4). A red blinking indicator shows when recording is active.
  • Save Data (5): Save measurements, including scale information and any zoomed-in graph sections. Additional information (e.g., machine name) can be added.
  • Printing (6, 7, 8): Generate "Linear graph" or "Radial graph" reports, which can be printed or saved as JPEG files. Additional report text can be inserted.
  • Graph (16): Displays the current measurement. Zoom tools (10) allow focusing on specific parts of the graph, which will then be printed. "Reset scale" (17) reverts to the original scale. "Peak to Peak" (11) and "Peak to Peak zoom" (12) indicators show the difference between maximum and minimum values for the whole curve and the zoomed area, respectively.
  • Cursors (9, 13, 14, 15): Activate "Show cursors" to display blue and yellow horizontal lines for determining differences between two points. The yellow cursor displays the difference value. Cursors can be moved by selecting the cursor tool and dragging them.

Bar-to-Bar Measurement

Accessed via button (4) on the main screen, this mode is similar to linear measurement but focuses on individual bars. Instead of recording time, it uses a "number of bars" setting (1). The software detects bars by peaks as the sensor moves between them. Rotor speed is critical; it should not exceed 30 bars per second for accurate measurement. A speed indicator (green for OK, orange for high, red for too high) is displayed. If the speed is too high, data cannot be saved. The graph shows real-time sensor values, including peaks between bars. After recording, the software identifies bars and displays one value per bar, converting the curve into a step-wise presentation. Linear and Radial reports are available, representing bars in circular or linear plots.

Open Saved Files

Button (5) on the main screen allows opening previously saved measurement files. The data is displayed exactly as it was saved, including any zoomed-in sections. Tools and reports are the same as in other measurement modes.

Measuring Analyzing (Add-on Tool)

Accessed via button (6), this advanced analysis tool requires an "analysis registration code." It provides extra functions for analyzing and comparing recorded curves.

  • Add Curves (1, 2): Add up to 10 curves for comparison.
  • Curve's Position (5, 6, 7): Adjust the position of selected curves to compare measurements at the same starting point.
  • X-Scale (8): Adjust the X-scale to view data in percent, bars, length, or degrees.
  • Export to Excel (9): Export measurements to an Excel file for further calculations and systematic evaluation of curve states. The export setup allows selecting specific curves and defining the X-scale in percent, degrees, or length.

ViRoTi Tool (Detailed Usage)

The ViRoTi tool profiles grooved slip rings and commutators. It requires two free USB ports and either two CL-Profiler probes or one CL-Profiler and one ViRoTi probe. The measure part "A" must be wider than the groove "B" (including chamfers). Probe software must be updated before use.

  • Placement: Place probes radially with an axial distance "C" on the slip ring or collector, ensuring they are on the measure part, not in the groove. Distance "C" can be calculated using the ViRoTi calculator in the "Settings menu."
  • Activation: Connect only the registered probe and start the CL-Profiler software. Activate "ViRoTi" in the "Settings." A ViRoTi option will appear in the measurement window. Activating this option will prompt connection of the second probe.
  • Operation: Once both probes are connected, two needles (red and green) will appear in the measure window. The radial position of each probe can be adjusted separately. Activating "zero startpoint" before profiling will align both probes to the same level, regardless of their physical Ruby tip positions. For wide grooves or mica slots, use 8mm ruby tips on both probes.

Maintenance Features

  • Ensure the cable to the sensor and USB port is undamaged.
  • Clean the sensor when necessary.
  • It is recommended to calibrate the sensor every two years.

Warranty

The warranty covers construction and material faults of the CL-Profiler equipment for 1 year from the invoice date. Damage due to incorrect or inexpert handling is excluded.

Important Considerations

  • The CL-Profiler probe must be placed as radially as possible, especially on commutators, as an angled probe position can cause damage.
  • Ballpoint tip diameter recommendations:
    • For mica slots: approximately 4 times larger than the full width of the mica slot, including chamfers.
    • For spiral grooves: approximately 3 times larger than the full width of the groove, including chamfers.
