Do you have a question about the Moxa Technologies EDS-2010-ML Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Moxa EDS-2010/2018-ML series are industrial Ethernet switches designed for high-bandwidth data convergence and long-distance uplinks in harsh industrial environments. These plug-and-play devices offer a range of features for reliable and easy operation.

Function Description

The EDS-2010/2018-ML series switches are equipped with 8 or 16 10/100M copper ports and 2 10/100/1000BaseT(X) or 100/1000BaseSFP combo ports. They support redundant 12/24/48 VDC power inputs, ensuring continuous operation even if one power source fails. The switches are designed for a standard operating temperature range of -10 to 60°C, with extended operating temperature models ("-T" models) available for -40 to 75°C. Their IP30 metal housing and DIN-rail mounting capability make them suitable for various industrial applications and distribution boxes.

These switches provide high-performance network switching technology, adhering to several IEEE standards including 802.3 for 10BaseT, 802.3u for 100BaseT(X), 802.3ab for 1000BaseT, and 802.3z for 1000BaseX. They also support IEEE 802.1p for Quality of Service (QoS) traffic prioritization and IEEE 802.3x flow control. The devices operate in store-and-forward switching mode, which filters out bad packets and optimizes performance under heavy network traffic.

The EDS switches feature an address table capable of holding up to 8K node addresses, making them suitable for large networks. This table is self-learning, automatically updating as nodes are added, removed, or moved. An address-aging algorithm ensures that the least-used addresses are deleted in favor of newer, more frequently used ones.

Usage Features

  • DIP Switch Configuration: Users can enable or disable broadcast storm protection, Quality of Service (QoS) function, and port break alarm function using DIP switches located on the outer panel. These settings are activated upon the next power-on.
  • Auto MDI/MDI-X Connection: The 10/100/1000BaseT(X) ports automatically detect the type of Ethernet cable (straight-through or cross-over) and device (NIC-type or HUB/Switch-type) connected, eliminating the need for manual configuration.
  • Triple Speed Functionality and Switching: The RJ45 switched ports auto-negotiate with connected devices to achieve the fastest possible data transmission rate (10/100/1000 Mbps). The half/full duplex mode is also automatically adjusted based on the attached device's capabilities.
  • Redundant Power Inputs: Both power inputs can be connected to live DC power sources simultaneously. If one source fails, the other automatically takes over, ensuring uninterrupted operation.
  • Alarm Contact: A single alarm contact provides relay output for power failure and port break alarms. This can be connected to a warning light or alarm system in a control room to indicate faults. The fault circuit forms an open circuit if power is lost from one DC input or if a port with an enabled PORT ALARM DIP Switch is not properly connected.
  • LED Indicators: The front panel features various LEDs (PWR1, PWR2, Fault, 10/100M, 10/100M/1000M, 100M, 1000M) to provide visual status updates on power, link activity, data transmission, and fault conditions.

Maintenance Features

  • Easy Installation and Removal: The switches support both DIN-rail and wall mounting. The DIN-rail mounting kit can be configured for back panel or side panel attachment (horizontal or vertical) to accommodate different cabling needs. The suggested installation and removal methods are straightforward, often requiring only a screwdriver for the DIN-rail latch.
  • Grounding: A grounding screw is provided for connecting to an external grounding surface using a 4 mm² conductor, helping to limit electromagnetic interference (EMI). The product is intended to be mounted to a well-grounded surface, such as a metal panel.
  • Wiring Requirements: Clear instructions are provided for wiring, emphasizing safety precautions such as disconnecting power before installation and observing maximum current ratings. Recommendations include using separate paths for power and device wiring, avoiding running signal and power wiring in the same conduit, and labeling all wiring for easy identification.
  • Protective Caps: The package includes protective caps for unused ports, which helps in maintaining the device's integrity and preventing dust ingress.
