Cylinder head removal
The Cylinder head of the MTD engine can be
removed without removing the engine from the piece of
equipment.
To remove the cylinder head:
1. Disconnect and ground the spark plug high ten-
sion lead.
2. Remove the spark plug using a 13/16” or 21mm
wrench.
3. Rotate the crankshaft until it is at TDC of the
compression stroke by following the steps
described in the valve lash section of Chapter 1:
Introduction.
4. Remove the muffler and heat shield by following
the steps described in Chapter 8: Exhaust.
5. Remove the engine shroud, carburetor and insu-
lator plate by following the steps described in
Chapter 3: Air Intake Systems.
6. Remove the two screws that secure the upper
left side of the blower housing.

7. Remove the heat baffle. See Figure 9.2.
8. Remove the screw that fastens the throttle lever
to the rear of the cylinder head using a 10 mm
wrench.
See Figure 9.3.
NOTE: The throttle lever can be disconnected
and removed from the engine or moved to the
side.
