Overview

This document is the User's Manual & Installation Instructions for the P3RA Series R-22 Single Package Air Conditioner, a 10 SEER unit. It provides comprehensive information for both users and installers, covering operation, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The P3RA packaged air conditioner is designed for outdoor ground-level installations and connects to high static duct systems in homes. Its primary function is to provide cooling for indoor spaces. The unit is designed for efficient operation, providing comfort when properly installed and maintained. It can be used with single-stage heating/cooling thermostats, allowing for both cooling and, optionally, heating operation. The system includes a continuous indoor blower operation feature to circulate indoor air, equalize temperature, and address issues like sun load, cooking, or fireplace operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Refrigerant: R-22. The manual explicitly states not to use any other refrigerant.
  • SEER Rating: 10 SEER.
  • Power Supply: Designed for 24 VAC Class II control circuit. 208/230 Volt units are factory wired for 230V operation, with an option for 208V by re-wiring a transformer lead.
  • Phase: Available in Single Phase (3, 4, & 5 Ton models) and Three Phase (5 Ton models only).
  • Minimum Clearances:
    • Blower access panel side: 24"
    • Electrical compartment access panel side: 12"
    • Clearance between overhang and top of unit: 72"
    • Clearance around condenser coil area to wall or shrubs (excluding duct panel side): 12"
    • Supply and return air ducts: 0"
    • Duct connection side: 0"
  • Duct Collar Sizes:
    • Return duct collar: 12" diameter for 3 ton models, 14" diameter for 4 & 5 ton models.
    • Supply duct collar: 12" diameter for all models.
  • Condensate Drainage: 3/4" condensate fitting.
  • Overcurrent Protection: Sized according to the unit rating label and local codes.
  • Voltage Imbalance (3-Phase): Should not exceed 2% for optimal motor efficiency and performance.
  • High Pressure Switch (HPS) - Optional: Opens if liquid pressure rises above 425 psig, closes at 360 psig.
  • Low Pressure Switch (LPS) - Optional: Opens if suction pressure falls below 5 psig, closes at 20 psig.
  • Blower Performance (Airflow Data): Provided in CFM for various external static pressures (in. WC) and different ton models (3, 4, 5 Ton) at high and low speeds. Maximum allowable external static pressure with electric heat added is 0.30" WC.
  • Physical Data (P3RA Models 036KA, 048KA, 060KA, 060CA):
    • Length (-L-): 49"
    • Width (W): 35"
    • Height (-H-): 22.2" (036KA), 30.2" (048KA, 060KA, 060CA)
    • Dimensions (-A-): 35.02"
    • Dimensions (-B-): 2.48"
    • Return Diameter (in): 12" (036KA), 14" (048KA, 060KA, 060CA)
    • Supply Diameter (in): 12" (all models)

Usage Features:

  • Thermostat Control: Operates via a thermostat with COOL, HEAT (optional), and AUTO system modes, and AUTO/ON fan modes. Temperature is set via a selector.
  • Short Cycle Protection: A protective timer circuit prevents the compressor and outdoor fan from restarting for approximately 5 minutes after a previous operation or power interruption.
  • Continuous Blower Operation: The indoor blower can run continuously by setting the thermostat fan mode to ON, regardless of the system mode.
  • Refrigerant Charging Charts: Detailed charts are provided for 3, 4, and 5 Ton units to verify and adjust refrigerant charge based on outdoor temperature and suction/discharge pressures.
  • Safety Features: High and Low Pressure Switches (optional) protect the system from abnormal pressure conditions.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Maintenance: Important for optimal performance and should be performed frequently at the beginning of each air conditioning season.
  • Filter Inspection and Replacement: Air filters in the return air duct must be inspected frequently and replaced with the same type and size when necessary. The unit should never be operated without a filter.
  • Condensate Drain and Outdoor Coil Inspection: Inspect and clean the condensate drain and outdoor coil at the beginning of each cooling season. Remove debris and clean the outdoor coil and louvers with mild detergent and water.
  • Electrical Connection Inspection: Inspect electrical connections for tightness at the beginning of each heating and cooling season.
  • Professional Servicing: Installation and servicing should only be performed by qualified, trained personnel familiar with the equipment and safe refrigerant handling procedures. The homeowner should not attempt to install or service the equipment.
  • Motor Lubrication: The compressor is hermetically sealed and does not require lubrication. Motors unequipped with oil tubes should not have additional oil added.
