Chapter 4 37
Installation
Pneumatics in Detector Controller Housing -
Manual Gas Flow Control
1. The Detector Controller requires a well-regulated pressure supply of H
2
and
air. Pressures in the 50–70 (maximum 90) psig range are acceptable.
2. Shut off all gas supply lines to be used for the PFPD’s pneumatic system.
3. All gas line tubing must be chromatography quality to minimize the back-
ground noise during operation.
4. Remove the protector caps from the AIR IN and H
2
IN connectors on the back
panel of the Detector Controller.
5. Connect the regulated air supply to the AIR IN connector and the regulated H
2
supply to the H
2
IN connector using the supplied Q/i" nut and ferrule (see
Figure 4.7). Make sure that the gas lines are pushed into the connector as far
as they will go before tightening the nuts onto the connector. Securely tighten
the Q/i" nut using a U/qy" wrench.
6. Cut the nylon tyraps holding the Q/qy" stainless steel gas lines from the PFPD
assembly together. Do not remove the nylon tags designating the COMB and
WALL gas lines. Unroll the gas lines without kinking them.
7. Route the gas lines to the back of the GC and out to the back of the Detector
Controller.
8. Remove the plastic protector plugs from the COMB and WALL gas connec-
tors and the protector caps on the ends of the COMB and WALL gas lines
leading from the base of the PFPD.
!
WARNING:
Hydrogen is
highly flammable
and may cause
an explosion if it
is allowed to
build up in an
enclosed area,
such as a GC
oven. Be sure the
supply is off until
all connections
are made. Do not
turn on the
hydrogen without
a column or cap
attached to the
detector inlet.
