38 Model 5380 PFPD Operator’s Manual
Rev. 3.1
9. Connect the COMB gas line from the PFPD assembly to the COMB gas
connector and the WALL gas line to the WALL gas connector on the back of
the Detector Controller using the attached Q/qy" nuts and ferrules. Make sure
that the gas lines are pushed into the connector as far as they will go before
tightening the nuts onto the connector. Securely tighten the nut using a T/qy"
wrench.
10. Gently turn the fine adjust needle valve to the OFF position (clockwise) (see
Figure 4.7). Do not tighten down as this can damage the needle. Then open
two full turns counterclockwise.
11. Set the Air 1 and Air 2 flow controllers as well as the H
2
flow controller to the
OFF position (fully clockwise) (see Figure 4.7).
12. Replace the flame arrestor on top of the detector cap with the barbed fitting
(Part #202077) included in the PFPD Start-up Kit, and attach a flowmeter to
the barbed end of the fitting.
13. Ensure that the column inlet to the detector is plugged with a no-hole ferrule or
that the column is attached (see “Installing the GC Column” in this chapter).
14. Turn on the air and H
2
gas supply.
15. Using the flowmeter, verify that the flow is off. If any flow is registering,
check that the Air 1, Air 2, and H
2
flow controllers are turned off. Turn each
flow controller on the front of the Detector Controller counterclockwise to
ensure that gas starts to flow. It is suggested that the initial gas flows to
operate the PFPD be set at this point, in the following way. If any flow
controllers were turned on, turn them off again.
Note: Allow a few minutes for each gas flow to stabilize before adjusting the next
gas flow.
16. If using a 2-mm combustor, adjust the Air 2 flow controller on the front of the
Detector Controller to supply 10 mL/min. Set the Air 1 flow to 10 mL/min
(i.e., 24 mL/min total flow of Air 1 plus Air 2). Set the H
2
flow to 11.5 mL/min
for sulfur mode or 9.0 mL/min for the phosphorus mode (i.e., 35.5 or 33 mL/
min total flow of Air 1, Air 2, and H
2
). Once these flow rates have equilibrated,
do not make any further adjustments to the control valve settings until you are
ready to optimize the operating parameters of the PFPD (see Chapter 5).
17. If using a 3-mm combustor, adjust the Air 2 flow controller on the front of the
Detector Controller to supply 10 mL/min. Set the Air 1 flow to 9.5 mL/min
(i.e. 23.5 mL/min total flow of Air 1 plus Air 2). Set the H
2
flow to 13 mL/min
for sulfur mode or 10.5 mL/min for the phosphorus mode (i.e. 36.5 or 34 mL/
min total flow of Air 1, Air 2, and H
2
). Once these flow rates have equilibrated,
do not make any further adjustments to the control valve settings until you are
ready to optimize the operating parameters of the PFPD (see Chapter 5).
18. Detach the flowmeter, remove the barbed fitting, and replace the flame
arrestor in the detector cap.
!
CAUTION: Do
not use the
needle valve as
an On/Off valve.
Overtightening
can distort the
needle valve’s
seal and make it
unreliable.
