4. Trim the top of the capillary column using a column scribe, and use a magni-
fying glass to verify that a square cut has been achieved. Ensure that no
column or scribe debris falls into the end of the column.
5. Wipe the column with a clean, methanol-moistened, lint-free lab tissue.
6. Carefully pull the capillary column
down until the column extends only
0.5 mm to 1.5 mm above the top of
the combustor support (see Figure
4.14). Tighten the GC column nut to
hold the column in position. Using a
magnifying glass, verify that the top
of the column is correctly positioned
0.5 mm to 1.5 mm above the top of
the combustor support.
Note: For optimal performance, the
column must be 0.5–1.5 mm
above the combustor support.
