PART 8: MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE VEHICLE LOADING
(R05/10) Y53-6032 – 183
Vehicle Loading
WARNING! Do not exceed the specified load rat-
ing. Overloading can result in loss of vehicle
control, death or personal injury, either by caus-
ing component failures or by affecting vehicle
handling. Exceeding load ratings can also
shorten the service life of the vehicle.
The components of your vehicle are designed
to provide satisfactory service if the vehicle is
not loaded in excess of either the gross vehicle
weight rating (GVWR) or the maximum front
and rear gross axle weight ratings (GAWRs).
Axle weight ratings are listed on the driver’s
door edge. Supervise all loading to ensure that
(1) the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is
not exceeded and (2) the load is distributed
correctly so that the weight distribution is
within the limits of the front and rear axle load
ratings. Severe damage to your vehicle, diffi-
cult handling, or an accident could occur if
your vehicle is not loaded properly.
An unevenly distributed load or a load too
heavy over one axle can affect the braking and
handling of your vehicle and cause an acci-
dent. Even if your load is under the legal limits,
be sure it is distributed evenly.
GVW: GVW is the Gross Vehicle Weight. This is the TOTAL
WEIGHT your vehicle is designed to carry. Never carry so
heavy a load that you exceed the GVW rating of your Peterbilt
vehicle.
Axle Weight: Your front and rear axles are rated according to
the load they are designed to carry. You will find this number
listed on the driver’s door frame.
