Fuel System Primary Filter (Water Separator) Element - Replace
1. Ensure that the
fuel system is in working order.
Check that the fuel supply valve (if equipped) is in
the “ON” position.
2. Turn the ke ysw itch to the RUN position.
3. The keyswitc
h will allow the electric priming pump
to operate. Operate the electric priming pump.
The ECM will stop the pump after 2 minutes.
4. Turnthekeyswitchtothe“OFF”position.Thefuel
system should now be primed and the engine
should be ab
le to start.
5. Operate the engine starter and crank the engine.
After the e
ngine has started, operate the engine at
low idle for a minimum of 5 minutes. Ensure that
the fuel system is free from leaks.
Note: Operating the engine for this period will help
ensure that the fuel system is free of air. DO NOT
loosen th
e high-pressure fuel lines in order to
purge air from the fuel system. This procedure is
not required.
After the engine has stopped, you must wait for
10 minutes in order to allow the fuel pressure to
be purge
d from the high-pressure fuel lines before
any service or repair is performed on the engine
fuel lines. If necessary, perform minor adjustments.
Repair a
ny leaks from the low-pressure fuel system
and from the cooling, lubrication, or air systems.
Replace any high-pressure fuel line that has leaked.
Refer t
o Disassembly and Assembly Manual, “Fuel
Injection Lines - Install”.
If you
inspect the engine in operation, always use
the proper inspection procedure in order to avoid
a uid penetration hazard. Refer to Operation and
Maint
enance Manual, General hazard Information”.
If the engine will not start, refer to Troubleshooting,
“Eng
ine Cranks but will not Start”.

Fuel System Primary Filter
(Water Separator) Element -
Replace
Fuel leak ed or spilled onto hot surfaces or elec-
trical components can cause a re. To help pre-
v
ent possible injury, turn the start switch off when
changing fuel lters or water separator elements.
Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Note: Refer to S
ystems Operation, Testing,
and Adjusting, “Cleanliness of Fuel System
Components” for detailed information on the
standards of c
leanliness that must be observed
during ALL work on the fuel system.
NOTICE
Ensure that
the engine is stopped before any servicing
or repair is performed.
Remove the Element
1. Turn the fuel supply valve (if equipped) to the OFF
position before performing this maintenance.
2. Place a suitable container under the water
separator in order to catch any fuel that might spill.
Clean up any spilled fuel. Clean the outside body
of the lter assembly.
3. Make a temporary Mark (A) a cross the lter before
the assembly is removed.

4. Install a suitable tube onto drain (3). Open
the drain valve (2). Rotate the drain valve
counterclockwise. Two full turns are required.
Loosen vent screw (1).
Note: T wo complete rotations of the valve will release
the valve from the lter element.
5. Allow the fuel to drain into the container. Remove
the tube and install the valve into the lter element.
Engage the threads of the valve into the lter
element. Do not secure the valve.
