W ater Pump - Inspect
•
Inspect the wir
ingandthewiringharnessesfor
loose connections and for worn wires or frayed
wires. Check for any loose tie-wraps or missing
tie-wraps.
•
Inspect the ground strap for a good connection and
for good cond
ition.
•
Disconnect any battery chargers that are not
protected a
gainst the current drain of the starting
motor. Check the condition and the electrolyte level
of the batteries, unless the engine is equipped with
a maintenan
ce free battery.
•
Check the condition of the gauges. Replace any
gauges tha
t are cracked. Replace any gauge that
cannot be calibrated.

Water P ump - Inspect
A failed water pump may cause severe engine
overhea
ting problems that could result in the following
conditions:
•
Cracks i
n the cylinder head
•
Apistonseizure
•
Other potential damage to the engine

Note: The water pump seals are lubricated by the
coolan
t in the cooling system. It is normal for a small
amount of leakage to occur. Refer to illustration 79
for the position of the weep hole and the vent hole.
Visually inspect the water pump for leaks.
Note:
If engine coolant enters the engine lubricating
system the lubricating oil and the engine oil fi lter must
be replaced. This will remove any contamination that
is ca
used by the coolant and this will prevent any
irregular oil samples.
The w
ater pump is not a serviceable item. In order to
install a new water pump, refer to the Disassembly
and Assembly Manual, “Water Pump - Remove and
Ins
tall”.
