•Whenruddergainandcounterrudderarebothsetcorrectly,
thevesselperformsasmoothcontinuousturnwithminimal
overshoot.
•Ifthecounterrudderistoolow,thevesselwillstillovershoot.
•Ifcounterrudderistoohigh,thevesselwill‘ght’theturnand
makeaseriesofshort,sharpturns.Thisresultsinavery
‘mechanical’feelasthevesselchangescourse.
Ifnecessary,adjustthecounterrudder.
Rudderdamping
Iftheautopilotis‘hunting’,i.e.continuouslymovingthesteering
backwardsandforwardsbysmallamounts,increasetherudder
dampingsetting.
AutoTrimsettings
AutoTrimdetermineshowquicklytheautopilotapplies‘standing
helm’tocorrectfortrimchanges,caused,forexample,bychanges
inthewindloadonthesuperstructure,oranimbalanceofengines.
IncreasingtheAutoTrimlevelreducesthetimetheautopilottakes
toreturntothecorrectcourse,butmakesthevessellessstable.
Iftheautopilot:
•Givesunstablecoursekeepingandthevessel‘snakes’around
thedesiredcourse,decreasetheAutoTrimlevel.
•Hangsoffcourseforexcessiveperiodsoftime,increasethe
AutoTrimlevel.
