VLT
Vertical Process Pump
48 V1.090418
Discharge valve closed.
Suction valve (if used) open.
Seal water valve (if used) open.
Motor and pump properly lubricated.
Only after these items have been checked should the pump be started.
WARNING: Exposed coupling and shafting between pump and driver must be
protected with coupling guard and/or shaft guard prior to pump start-up and
operation.
After all the above mentioned items have been considered, the startup procedure is as follows:
1. Before starting the pump, check the security of all bolting, piping, and wiring.
2. If your pump uses oil as a lubricant for the shaft and the shaft and bowl bushings, the oil
drip valve located on the oil tank must be opened and a stable drip rate must be set
around 8 to 10 hours prior to the pump’s startup, to ensure correct lubrication.
3. Check all gauges, valves and instruments for proper working order.
4. Check all equipment for proper lubrication and correct rotation.
5. Verify that the discharge valve is partially open and that the discharge tubing is properly
connected.
6. Verify that the impellers have been properly adjusted during installation and that the
driver and pump shafts turn without problem.
7. Lubricate the shaft injecting the pumped fluid during 3 minutes for pumps whose shaft
length is up to 40 ft. Continue injecting fluid for an additional minute for every additional
100 ft of shaft.
8. Startup the pump.
9. Check if the pump runs smoothly, without excessive vibrations. If the pump seems to have
trouble starting up or if it vibrates excessively, STOP THE PUMP INMEDIATELY and check
SECTION ELEVEN TROUBLESHOOTING CHART for possible causes and solutions.
10. Slowly open the discharge valve until the discharge pressure reaches the desired level or
the valve is fully open.
11. Tighten the seal gland nuts.
