VLT
Vertical Process Pump
9 V1.090418
The seal faces are located in a separate seal chamber (external seal). External recirculation piping is
required for cooling, lubrication and venting of the seal faces (standard API plans). The nozzle head
also supports the pump driver. The driver engages the pump through a four piece coupling which
consists of a driver half coupling, a pump half coupling, adjusting plate and a spacer. The adjusting
plate raises the pump rotating element into proper running position. The spacer allows removal of
the mechanical seal and sleeve assembly without lifting the motor from the nozzle head.
1.4 SUCTION CAN
The suction can directs the pumped liquid into the suction area of the pump bowl assembly. The can
mounting flange supports the weight if the entire assembled pumping unit including the driver. When
the pump is installed within the suction can, it must remain in its vertical position otherwise high
stresses can be imposed on the pump.
1.5 COLUMN TUBE
When NPSH requirements dictate using special first stage impellers, column tubes are added to
lengthen the column. They are fabricated of low steel carbon. An integrally fabricated bearing
retainer is welded into the upper end of each element. This ensures that the retainer is machined
parallel and concentric with the column tube for exact bearing alignment. The connections between
the column tubes and the nozzle head are aligned by rabbeted fits sealed with O-ring gaskets.
1.6 SHAFT
The pump shaft is constructed using stainless steel and in one piece whenever possible.
1.7 SHAFT SEALING
VLT pumps are supplied with a single cartridge mechanical seal as standard. Single and double (back-
to-back or tandem) mechanical seals can be used. The stuffing box is designed to accommodate all
state-of-the-art mechanical seals according to API 610 and API 682.
