DUG-10009-01 RTM II FlexNet User Guide
1.1 RTM II Overview
The RTM II uses the radio network to enable communications between IEDs with supported protocols
and Sensus AutomationControl™. When it receives data from the RTM II, AutomationControl displays
the data immediately. Alternatively, the customer can use Sensus Automation’s DNP SCADA-Xchange™
software, which uses a secure TCP/IP connection to transfer the DNP3 data directly to the utility's
SCADA system.
Most newer generation Remote Termina
l Units (RTUs) and IEDs use the standard DNP3 communication
protocol to communicate with utility SCADA systems. The RTM II also provides a Modbus interface to the
many IEDs and RTUs that support this protocol.
The RTM II connects to an IED such as a recloser, voltag
e regulator, or capacitor bank controller through
an RS-232 serial port or an optional RS-485 serial port. The RTM II can either be installed as a
communications board within the IED enclosure or externally in its own weatherproof enclosure.
