4.11 Linear deformation in the pipe system
The lengths of the pipes change as the temperature varies.
● Temperature increase = pipes lengthen
● Temperature decrease = pipes shorten
Mount the pipe fastenings in such a way that the pipes can lengthen and shorten
unhindered as the temperature varies.
The linear deformation is proportional to the temperature variation and can be
calculated using this formula:
ΔL = L ‧ ΔT ‧ δ
ΔL = Linear expansion [mm]
L = Length of pipe [m]
ΔT = Maximum temperature difference [°C]
δ = Linear expansion coefficient [mm/m°C]

Example:
ABS pipe length 8m, temperature difference 12°C
Linear deformation = 9.7mm
ΔL = 8m ‧ 12°C ‧ 0.101mm/m°C = 9.7mm
