The NK8000 maintenance and diagnostic tools
The Kernel update may take several minutes. Make sure not to power off the
NK823x unit or the Windows computer during the update procedure.
Note that two Kernel versions are presented that are automatically selected for the
NKM8001-A1 or the NKM8001-A2 mainboard, respectively.
9.2 The NK8000 maintenance and diagnostic tools
There are two main maintenance and diagnostic applications available for NK8000
networks. One application (or tool), the NW8204 tool, is contained in the DMS8000
DVD. The other, the NK8000 Web Server tool, is available via Internet Explorer.
Both tools have the same NW8204 functionalities.
A third tool is the on-board Web Server, available for NK823x units, which provides
the same diagnostic information as the NW8204 tool.
Note: The Web Server tool is available for NS8210 only. Use NW8204 (and/or
Composer-based monitoring tools) for NS8011 BACnet/IP driver.
Note: There are slight differences in the NW8204 graphic user interface (installed
vs. Web).
In addition to the NW8204 tool, the NK8000 Web Server tool provides NS8210 and
NK82xx diagnostic utilities. To the end user these tools appear to function in the
same way, however there are important differences:
⚫ NW8204 is a password-protected Windows application that runs on a central
server, and can be installed on a networked PC. It offers maximum security,
whenever this may be matter of concern.
⚫ The NK8000 Web Server tool, available for the central NS8210 driver, can offer
a web browser access, available anywhere on the network with no need of
installing any software. This approach, which requires the network connection,
is faster and easier. Although the access to the web application requires a
password, the security is inferior to the one assured by the NW8204 application
(see Working with the NK8000 Web Server [➙ 74] about IIS security issues).
