5.3 METIRIO Readhead Alignment to Scales
The mounting possibilities of the encoder system are manifold. For example, some linear motion
systems basically consist of a movable carriage and a guide rail. In such a setup the readhead is
mounted within the movable carriage, while the scale is mounted along an edge or in a mounting
slot of the stationary guide rail.
However, in other motion systems, like for example the SmarAct SLC-series the scale might be
mounted onto the movable carriage while the readhead is mounted in the stationary base-plate
of the rail.
For rotary systems on the other hand, in most cases the scale disc is mounted on the movable
part and the encoder is connected to the stationary part of the housing.
Due to the various possible application scenarios, SmarAct Metrology provides various scales and
discs with different dimensions. Due to the great variety of mounting possibilities and applica-
tions, we cannot give exact mounting instructions in this chapter. But in the following sections the
positional relationship and alignment tolerances between the readhead and the scale are given.
From an optical point of view the positional relationship refers always to the cover glass of
the METIRIO Readhead and the scale’s track separation line on the front surface. Defining
the relations this way, ensures proper alignment regardless of the housing variant and the
scale dimensions.
• Place the encoder centered to the track separation line.
• Pin 1 should face the incremental Track A. The SmarAct logo on the cover glass indicates the
pin 1 corner.
• The readhead’s cover glass should face the top surface of the scale.
• The surfaces of the readhead and the scale should be parallel.
