If your Smith-Root Portable Generator isn't generating electricity, begin by checking the output voltage at the 12 VAC terminals using a lamp or meter. Ensure that the load isn't too large, and reduce it if needed. Inspect the line for a short circuit using an ohmmeter. Test the diodes with an ohmmeter to see if they are shorted or open. Also, check the stator winding or field winding for shorts. If necessary, flash the generator.
