IP 65 Shows how well a device is protected against
moisture and dust getting into it. Devices
with IP 65 can be set up in rooms and out-
doors.
Isc Ishort-circuit, see short-circuit current.
Junction box Part of the master inverter that is used, for ex-
ample, for connecting the AC cable and data
cable of both the master and the slave.
LED Light Emitting Diode (display lamp)
Master An inverter in which several central functions
are implemented. These functions are also
meant for the so-called slave inverters but are
only implemented in the master device.
Maximum Power Point The DC voltage and the DC current of a solar
module at which the module produces the
most power.
Master-slave principle A master controls 1 or 2 slaves
MPPT Maximum Power Point Tracking: a function of
the inverter that ensures that the solar mod-
ules work at the Maximum Power Point.
MSD (ENS) 'Device for monitoring the grid with two
independent switching devices connected in
series.' A module that measures system im-
pedance. When the impedance fluctuates too
much the inverter is disconnected. The use
of this module is mandatory in Germany and
Austria.
Multi-Contact Manufacturer of a particular kind of connec-
tors
Open circuit voltage The voltage that a module produces when no
electricity is flowing.
Photovoltaic effect Converting light into electricity
PV Photovoltaics, see 'photovoltaic effect'.
PV system A system in which solar modules produce
electricity.
Reverse polarity protection A protective device that prevents the posi-
tive connection of the module from being
connected to the negative connection of the
inverter.
Short-circuit current (STC) The current that the solar modules produce
under standard test conditions when they are
short-circuited.
System configuration The way in which several solar modules are
interconnected and jointly connected to the
inverter.
Slave An inverter that is contolled by the master.
Sleep mode A operating mode of the inverter used to
minimise nighttime consumption.
Solar module A unit with a number of solar cells connected
in series. The solar cells convert light into volt-
age and current.
Stand-alone operation The name for the operation of an inverter
without a grid voltage being present.
String A number of solar modules connected in
series
Tamb The ambient temperature (in this case:
around the inverter)
