2.5 MS Detector
The MS detector provides sample ionization and mass analysis of injected
samples or samples eluted from a liquid chromatograph. The LTQ MS
detector uses a linear ion trap mass analyzer with an ion source external to the
mass analyzer. Several important features of the LTQ MS detector are as
follows:
Universal, selective, and specific detector
High sensitivity
Multiple mass ranges
ESI, APCI, APPI, and NSI ionization techniques
Positive and negative ion polarity modes
MS, MS/MS, and MS
n
scan modes
Full scan, SIM, SRM, CRM, and ZoomScan scan types
Data-Dependent, Ion Mapping, and Ion Tree experiments
The MS detector includes the following components:
Controls and indicators
API source
Ion optics
Mass analyzer
Ion detection system
Vacuum system and inlet gasses hardware
Cooling fans
Electronic assemblies
Controls and Indicators
Five light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are located at the upper right side of the
front panel of the MS detector. See Figure 2-4.
The LED labeled Power is illuminated whenever power is supplied to the
vacuum system and electronic assemblies of the MS detector. The color of the
LED depends on whether the MS detector is in the Normal, Warning, or
Failure condition, as follows:
In the Normal condition, the temperature in the MS detector is less than
37 °C and its +5 V dc supply level is between +4.98 and +5.25 V dc. The
Power LED is illuminated solid green.
