Checkthehydrauliclinesandhosesdailyfor
leaks,kinkedlines,loosemountingsupports,wear,
loosettings,weatherdeterioration,andchemical
deterioration.Makeallnecessaryrepairsbefore
operating.
CuttingUnitMaintenance
BladeSafety
Awornordamagedbladeorbedknifecanbreak,and
apiececouldbethrowntowardyouorbystanders,
resultinginseriouspersonalinjuryordeath.
•Inspectthebladesandbedknivesperiodicallyfor
excessivewearordamage.
•Usecarewhencheckingtheblades.Weargloves
andusecautionwhenservicingthem.Only
replaceorbacklapthebladesandbedknives;
neverstraightenorweldthem.
•Onmachineswithmultiplecuttingunits,takecare
whenrotatingacuttingunit;itcancausethereels
intheothercuttingunitstorotate.

Reel-to-BedknifeContact
Eachdaybeforeoperatingthemachine,checkthe
reel-to-bedknifecontact,regardlessifthequalityofcut
hadpreviouslybeenacceptable.Theremustbelight
contactacrossthefulllengthofthereelandbedknife;
refertotheCuttingUnitOperator’sManual.
SettingtheReelSpeed
Toachieveaconsistent,high-qualitycutandauniform
after-cutappearance,youmustcorrectlysetthereel
speedcontrol(locatedonthemanifoldblockunder
thecovertotheleftoftheseat).Adjustthereelspeed
controlasfollows:
1.Decidetheheightofcutatwhichthecutting
unitsareset.
2.Decidethedesiredgroundspeedbestsuited
forconditions.
3.Usetablethatfollowstodeterminethe
reel-speedsettingforyour5-,8-,11-,or
14-bladecuttingunits(Figure51).
