Chapter 5: Navigation & Communication Equipment
Read and understand the manuals for all navigation & communication equipment before using these systems for the
first time and observe the following:
VHF Radio (If Equipped)
• The VHF (Very High Frequency) radio can be used to access weather reports, summon assistance or contact
other vessels as permitted by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission).
• Contact the FCC for licensing, rules and regulations concerning VHF radio usage.
Compass
• Compass accuracy can be affected by many factors.
• Have a qualified technician calibrate your compass.
• Make sure the technician gives you a deviation card which shows the corrections to apply
in navigational calculations. Keep a copy of the deviation card at each helm.
