Speed Control Lever
Thespeedcontrollever,locatedonthe
left sideof the tractor'sdashconsole,
allowsyouto regulatethegroundspeed
ofthelawntractor.Touse,depressthe
clutch-brakepedalandmovetheleveroul
oftheparkingbrakenotchandforward
toincreasethetractor'sgroundspeed.
Whenadesiredspeedhasbeenreached
releasethe leverintoan appropriate
notchto maintainthatspeed.
Toslowthetractor'sgroundspeed,
depresstheclutch-brakepedaland move
thespeedcontrolleverrearwardand
releaseit intoa notch.
NOTE:Lawntractorsvaryby modeland
areavailablewitheithera 6- or 7-speed
controllever.
Parking Brake
Tosettheparkingbrake,fullydepressthe clutch-brake
pedal.Movethespeedcontrolleverallthe waydown
andintotheparkingbrakeposition.Releasethe clutch-
brakepedaltoallowtheparkingbraketo engage.
Toreleasethe parkingbrake,depressthe clutch-brake
pedaland movethe speedcontrolleveroutofthe
notchesto the desiredposition.Releasethe speed
controlleverandtheclutch-brakepedal.
NOTE:Theparkingbrakemustbesetif theoperator
leavestheseatwiththeenginerunningor the engine
willautomaticallyshutoff.
Clutch-Brake Pedal
Theclutch-brakepedalislocatedontheleft sideof
thelawntractor,alongtherunningboard.Depressthe
clutch-brakepedalpartwaydownwhenslowingthe
tractorbychangingspeeds(Referto SpeedControl
Lever).Depressthe pedalall thewaydowntoengage
thedisc brakeand bringthe tractorto a completestop.
NOTE:Thepedalmustbedepressedto startthe
engine.Referto SafetyInterlockSwitcheson page14.
Shift Lever
Theshiftleverislocatedon the leftsideof thefender
andhasthreepositions,FORWARD,NEUTRALand
REVERSE.Thebrakepedalmustbedepressedand
thetractormustnotbe inmotionwhenthe movingshift
lever.SeeFigure11.
IMPORTANT:Neverforcetheshiftlever.Doingso may
resultinseriousdamageto the tractor'stransmission.
PTO (Blade Engage) Lever
Foundon the tractor'srightfender,the
PTO(bladeengage)leveris usedto
engagepowertothecuttingdeckor
other(separatelyavailable)attachments.
Tooperate,movethe leverall the way
forward.Movingthe leverall theway
rearwardintothe PTOOFFposition
disengagespowerto the cuttingdeck/
attachment.
NOTE:ThePTO(bladeengage)lever
mustbe inthe disengaged(PTOOFF)
positionwhenstartingthe engine.

Safety Interlock Switches
Thistractorisequippedwitha safetyinterlocksystem
fortheprotectionoftheoperator.If the interlocksystem
shouldever malfunction,donotoperatethe tractor.
ContactanauthorizedMTDservicedealer.
* Thesafetyinterlocksystempreventstheengine
fromcrankingor startingunlessthe parkingbrakeis
engaged,andthe PTO(BladeEngage)leveris inthe
disengaged(OFF)position.
* Theenginewillautomaticallyshutoffif the operator
leavestheseatbeforeengagingtheparkingbrake.
* Theenginewillautomaticallyshutoffif the operator
leavesthetractor'sseatwiththe PTO(BladeEngage)
leverintheengaged(ON)position,regardlessof
whetherthe parkingbrakeis engaged.
* Theenginewillautomaticallyshutoffif the operator
engagesthePTOwiththe parkingbrakeON.
