Thismechanismismeanttodeterminethenextdestinationof
apacket,thatis,determinewhetherthedestinationofapacket
isonalocallink.Ifitisonthelocallink,thenthenexthopis
thedestination.Otherwise,thepacketneedstoberoutedand
thenexthopwillserveasarouter .Theneighbordiscoverycan
beusedtodeterminearoutertobeused.
�NeighborUnreachableDetection
Neighbordiscoverycanhelpnodestodeterminewhethera
neighbor(destinationnodeorrouter)isreachable.
�RepeatedAddressDetection
Neighbordiscoveryhelpsanodetodeterminewhetheranad-
dressitwantstousehasbeenoccupiedonthelocallink.
�Redirection
Sometimestheforwardingrouterselectedbyanodeisnot
theoptimumforapackettobeforwarded.Inthiscase,the
forwardingroutercanredirectthenodetosendthepacketto
anoptimumrouter .
Forexample,thenodesendsthepacketthatoriginallyistobe
senttotheInternettothedefaultrouterthatprovidesservice
fortheintranetofthenode.Thisintranetroutercanredirect
thenode,thussendingthepackettotheInternetrouterthat
isconnectedwiththesamelocallink.
Theneighbordiscoveryisimplementedbydeningthespecial
ICMPpackets,including:
�RouterAdvertisement
Thispacketrequirestheroutertoadvertiseitsavailabilitype-
riodically,aswellasthelinksandInternetparametersforcon-
guration.Theseadvertisementscontainthenetworkaddress
prexinusing,thesuggestedhop-by-hoplimitingvalueand
thelocalMTUindication,andagoftheautocongurationtype
tobeusedbyaspeciednode.
�RouterSolicitation
Ahostcansolicitthelocalroutertosenditsrouteradvertise-
mentimmediately.Theroutermustsendtheseadvertisements
periodically.However ,ifitreceivesarouterrequestpacket,it
